Part 1: Two Kids, One Big Plan

Growing up in the 1970s, my family was a little unconventional, to say the least. Coming from a biracial family during a time when racism divided people, I didn’t have a huge extended family to grow up around. For a long time, it was mostly just my mom, my dad, my paternal grandparents, and me.

But then there was Victor. ❤️

Victor is my half-brother, and we were only 99 days apart in age. Yes, ninety-nine days! 😂 My mom had the opportunity to raise us together for a couple of years, and she absolutely loved having a little boy and a little girl under the same roof. We were little, we were curious, and as far as I can remember, we were pretty good at keeping ourselves entertained.

Sometimes, perhaps a little too entertained. This particular memory has been on my mind lately, probably because Halloween is just around the corner. I can still picture the two of us in those old-fashioned Halloween costumes. You know the ones from back in the day? The plastic outfits you stepped into and tied around your neck, paired with those plastic masks held on by a thin elastic band.

Nothing says childhood quite like sweating inside a plastic mask while trying to breathe through those tiny little holes! 😂

Anyway, one weekend morning, we found ourselves awake before the grown-ups. And we had a craving.

Not for cereal. Not for toast. Not even for cookies.

We wanted pumpkin bread.

Oh, we wanted pumpkin bread BADLY.

Now, when you’re a little kid, you don’t always stop to consider the logistics of a project. You don’t wonder whether you know how to use an oven, whether you have the right equipment, or whether your parents might want to be involved in the process.

Nope!

You get an idea, and suddenly, that idea becomes the most important mission of your entire life.

And so, two little kids, still wearing their Halloween costumes, decided they were going to make pumpkin bread for the whole family.

We were going to surprise everyone!

We were going to be helpful!

We were going to be magnificent little chefs!

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, friends, I’ll tell you what could go wrong. But that’s a story for tomorrow. 😉🎃
