A Little Taste of Home

Part 3: The Dog Told on Us! 🎃😂

Well, friends, it’s time for the grand finale of the Great Pumpkin Bread Disaster!

If you’ve been following along, you know my brother Vic and I had a plan. We wanted pumpkin bread, we had gathered our ingredients, and we had selected what we considered the perfect baking location.

Mom’s unprotected couch. 🤦‍♀️😂

We didn’t have mixing bowls, but that certainly wasn’t going to stop us! We had eggs, flour, pumpkin, butter, spoons, spatulas, and all the confidence in the world.

So we got to work.

Flour was flying. Pumpkin was everywhere. We were nibbling on ingredients, licking butter, and sharing heaps with our Great Dane. Thinking back I don’t know why my mother had such a stockpile of butter 🤔.

And that dog? Well, she was getting quite the breakfast!

We may have fed her close to a pound of butter. But in our defense, she was a Great Dane, and we were little kids who had absolutely no understanding of proper serving sizes. 🤣

Then came the barking.

And more barking.

And MORE BARKING!

We were so busy creating our masterpiece that we didn’t really pay attention to the dog sounding the alarm.

Until, finally, the grown-ups woke up.

OH. NO. WE HAD BEEN DISCOVERED. 😳

I can only imagine what Mom and Dad saw when they walked into the living room. Two little children covered in flour from head to toe, pumpkin and eggs everywhere, a couch that had become a crime scene, and a Great Dane who had apparently been recruited as our kitchen assistant.

And there we stood, probably feeling pretty proud of ourselves.

We weren’t trying to cause trouble – pinky swear. We were just making pumpkin bread for our family! In our little minds, this was an act of love. We were preparing a special treat for everyone.

We just hadn’t considered the cleanup.

Or the couch.

Or the dog.

Or the fact that we didn’t actually know how to bake. 😂😂😂

I honestly don’t remember what happened after our parents discovered our little operation. I can’t tell you what our punishment was, or whether we ever produced anything resembling edible pumpkin bread dough.

But I do remember one thing.

I didn’t try cooking anything again without Mom’s help until I was grown, out of the house, and on my own.

Apparently, that lesson stuck!

❤️ Looking back, I wouldn’t trade that memory.

Vic and I were only 99 days apart in age, and for a couple of years, we shared a home and a childhood full of little adventures.

Life eventually took us in different directions, but those memories are still a part of me.

Growing up, my family wasn’t the big, extended family you see in the movies. Sometimes, family was simply the people living under one roof, making memories together.

And sometimes, those memories involve a Great Dane, a pound of butter, and a couch that never volunteered to become a bakery.

I wish I could tell you we made the best pumpkin bread ever.

But I suspect Mom had a slightly different opinion of our culinary talents that morning. 🤣🎃

Thank you for coming along on this little trip down memory lane with me. It’s funny how something as simple as an attempt at making pumpkin bread can take us back to childhood and remind us of the people, the laughter, and the moments we carry with us.

A little taste of home isn’t always about the food. Sometimes, it’s about the memories that still make us smile decades later. ❤️

Now, tell me, friends: Did you ever attempt to cook something as a child and end up creating an absolute disaster? Or did your own children give you a kitchen story you’ll never forget?

I would LOVE to hear your stories!

With love, laughter, and a little taste of home,

LaSusa’s Bakes N Sweets ❤️

NOTE** The Great Dane in this personal photo is NOT Oba, she’s Lottie and that’s a whole other story!!!!!!
